Almost 150 years ago, busy Spanish colonizers were establishing the pioneer community of Reynosa on the south bank of the Rio Grande (they called it the Rio Bravo del Norte, and still do), the first of a string of northern Mexican settlements that eventually included Laredo, 150 miles up-river. Ten years ago Reynosa was a town of 300,000 people which has now grown to a modern metropolis of 1.2 million. Reynosa is across the border from McAllen, TX. Hoping one day to cross into the U.S., thousands come from Southern Mexico, Central and South America, and all over the world to border towns like Reynosa, causing a bottle neck effect. Many are turned away at the border or deported once in the US. They have spent all of their money just to get to the border and now have no money, no job, no family, and no home to live in. Finding scraps of plastic, tin, pallets, and tree limbs, they build shelters and live in despair.

SST will infiltrate Reynosa, ministering, eating, and sleeping south of the border. Housing consists of a camp just outside of the Reynosa city limits. Dorm style sleeping arrangements and quality bathroom facilities (for Mexico) are all part of the “Mexico experience.” You will enjoy classic YWAM-SST food for three meals a day and even eat tacos at authentic Mexican restaurants (top)

Because there are so many needs in Reynosa we never run out of things to do. We will be ministering in places like orphanages, missions, neighborhood centers, plazas, street corners, and even a youth prison. With various media like drama, human video, dance, children’s skits, clowns, sports, Vacation Bible Schools, orphanage and prison ministry you will have the opportunity to minister in a variety of ways.
